"One O'Clock Jump" may be Count Basie's signature tune, but there are quite a few Basie compositions I like a lot more. "Whirlybird," for instance. This version broadcast back in 1965 on the BBC highlight's Basie's masterful use of volume in his music--varying from soft to loud to enhance the whole. Just check out how deftly Basie inserts a few choice piano notes in there during that spectacular drum solo. Quintessential Basie.
