Janelle Monáe first caught my attention with her science fiction-infused debut, The Chase Suite, in 2008. She's creative and talented, but in recent years she dropped off my radar until her excellent performance in "Hidden Figures." Now she's got a new album, and the third single "Pynk," has turned out to be somewhat controversial. Monáe certainly casts subtlety to the wind on this one. It's all kinds of messed-up, and that is a wonder to behold. I come away with the impression that this video is exactly what Monáe wanted it to be, conveying exactly the message she wanted. Isn't that the goal of any artist?
