I've never been a Depeche Mode fan. Their particular style of Euro/techno/dance pop never did much to float my boat. That said, I kinda dig their cover of "Route 66." It's not better than the original, but it does what too many covers fail to do--make the cover a unique expression that is distinct from the original. This does that in spades.

If Depeche Mode is a bridge too far for you, then you might find Glenn Frey's retro take more to your liking, or maybe Diana Krall's jazz version (but the real star of that one is Russell Malone's guitar solo).

Sometimes a collaborator brings out the best in an artist. Such is the case with the late 80s pairing of Paul McCartney and Elvis Costello. Costello's single from that collaboration, "Veronica," is an emotive masterpiece.
