Stereophonic Space Sound Unlimited is a fascinating retro band. Well, retro isn't exactly the right word for it. Their sound is modern, but it is a fusion of surf, lounge, bossa nova, jazz and a host of other influences. "Come Out to Play" has a distinctly 60s vibe to it, with suggestions of sitar and other exotic elements. One of the strangest things about this video is how they use seemingly random images from the old Disney movie "The Black Hole" throughout. Pretty trippy, but I can't make any deeper connection beyond the fact whoever was gathering images for this video thought they were "Far out, man!" If you're looking for mood-setting instrumental pieces, look no farther.

John Fogerty's video for "The Old Man Down The Road" ran incessantly on the non-MTV video shows I had access to back in the day. Which means I grew to hate it. Oversaturation kills, you know? At the time, I didn't realize what a big deal Fogerty's return to recording was. The song is a perfect update to his swamp rock sound from Creedence, and I've come full circle on the video, which I originally thought clever, then thought cheap after I got sick of it, and now think clever again. Carry on.

Last night we went to a local concert in the park. It was hot, but fun. At one point, the band went into a riff that sounded all the world like the intro to Heart's "Barracuda," which would've been a great cover selection, all things considered. But alas, no, they meandered a bit before going into another tune. But Ann and Nancy Wilson stayed on my mind, so tonight's video is their 1977 rocker.

For our anniversary the other night, Secrets By Miss Lisa and I went for dinner and drinks to Tiki Tatsu-ya (highly reccomended, by the way). Whilst there, we heard a surf guitar version of Shocking Blue's "Venus" which neither of us has heard before. We dug it, but had no idea who performed it. Well, I can't let an unknown like that linger, so once we got home I did a deep dive into the interwebz and came up with... Los Straightjackets! Awesome--I should've known it would be these veterans of the surf guitar scene who did this bitchin' cover, but you never know until you know, amIrite? Here's their take on "Venus."
