Let's start the Christmas season off with a newer song that's, well, more tangentially about the holiday than most. But it's still wistful and nostalgic as many of the best Kinks songs are. Here's Ray Davies and Chrissie Hynde in a rare duet, "Postcards from London."

Christmas gets all the attention when it comes to music. There just aren't that many Thanksgiving songs. The great Ray Davies rectifies that some with "Thanksgiving Day." Have a good one, and travel safely.

When did Ray Davies perform on Austin City Limits, and why didn't anybody tell me!? While I dearly love the Kinks, I've been quite impressed with Ray's solo work as well. This cut from Other People's Lives, his first solo studio album, is a great case in point. "The Getaway (Lonesome Train)" is mournful and understated. It's not a song that jumps out and grabs you, like say a "Lola" or "You Really Got Me," but it's got staying power. Its haunting moodiness stays with you and beckons you back for more. That's great songwriting, folks.

A bit of Ray Davies brilliance for the season, since we haven't had any Kinks-related content for quite a while. This live version of "Thanksgiving Day" is great--Ray's instincts on acoustic arrangements are always spot-on--but the studio version is even better, if you can believe it. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. Drive safely next week!
