A couple of weeks ago saw the opening of Jan & Dean's Tiki Lounge out in California. This reminded me of how much I enjoyed Jan & Dean's music, and I was surprised to discover how few performance clips there are of them on line. I did find this vintage piece from early in their career, singing the Brian Wilson-penned "Surf City." What's interesting here is that they're most decidedly not lip-synching, and Jan changes up the lyrics throughout the song. It's pretty clear that 1) he isn't forgetting the lyrics--he's goofing around on purpose, and 2) Dean has no idea what to expect next, judging from his expressions. Jan & Dean were notorious for being jokesters, so this certainly fits with their character.
