Friday Night Videos

I will admit that "Fat Bottomed Girls" is my favorite Queen song. It's such an absurd song, so silly and so wrong, that I can't help but love it. The fact that it's Freddie Mercury belting it out? Hilarious! But now here comes Remember Monday with a scorching, estrogen-drenched cover of it and I don't think I'll ever be the same. Damn, these women rock!

No, it isn't "Bohemian Rhapsody," but in the pantheon of Queen songs, "Headlong" gets unfairly overlooked. I really got into rock during Queen's hiatus, so this single, which came out in 1991, was my first real exposure to the band before Wayne's World. I quite liked it. Unfortunately, the video for the song is much more conventional, and far less gonzo, than most anything else they did. On the bright side, seeing Freddie Mercury dressed as a suburban dad and Brian May wearing a Bart Simpson shirt makes up for a lot.

How about some Bowie and Queen? The video's a bit odd, but you can't top "Under Pressure." Fantastic tune.

Friday Night Videos

Well friends, I don't know how long I'll be able to keep the Friday Night Videos feature going here. Four consecutive songs I hunted up on YouTube had either been deleted or "Embedding disabled by request." Sigh. At least Queen gets it. YouTube serves the same purpose as MTV and Friday Night Videos did back in the day--that is, it's a promotional platform for music to encourage more sales. Videos are a 4 minute commercial for a song in particular, and albums in general (and considering the music selection I feature here, Greatest Hits collections). Fortunately, Queen understands that exposure is a good thing, which is why the brilliantly skewed "Fat Bottomed Girls" is the featured song today. Freddie Mercury could preen like some unholy fusion of Mick Jagger and Tim Curry, and rocked like no other. Enjoy!
